Black Girls Rock! Set to Return on Lifetime

February 27, 2024

Black Girls Rock! is back!

After a five year hiatus, the awards show that honors the success and achievements of Black women will return, signaling the start of a long-term legacy of cultural celebration and empowerment.

Black Girls Rock! previously aired on BET from 2010 to 2019 but will be moving to Lifetime for its triumphant comeback. The awards show will be taped live in Atlanta, Georgia on June 27 and will air in the Fall.

“As we embark on this new chapter for Black Girls Rock!, it’s a pivotal moment to amplify our movement and reinforce our mission to uplift, inspire, and empower black women and girls worldwide,” Black Girls Rock! founder Beverly Bond tells Because of Them We Can.

The Black Girls Rock! awards have always sought to honor “the outstanding contributions of trailblazers, entertainers, icons, community activists, pioneers, business moguls, thought leaders and rising stars,” according to a press release obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. Past honorees include Taraji P. Henson, Hydeia Broadbent, Erykah Badu, Queen Latifah, Issa Rae, Cicely Tyson, Solange, Angela Bassett, Janet Jackson, and more.

This year, Bond partnered with Mayor Andre Dickens of Atlanta to bring back the televised event and also offer a broader Black Girls Rock! experience in “a city rich [with a] legacy of activism and cultural vibrancy,” Bond explains. “Alongside Lifetime, a network dedicated to amplifying women’s stories, we’ve forged an ideal alliance for our journey forward. Together, we are dedicated to celebrating the boundless potential and radiant spirit of Black girls and women everywhere.” The city-wide Black Girls Rock! experience will feature an array of events and celebrations throughout Atlanta, including the BGR! Expo, a film festival, a concert series, and more.

Black Girls Rock! returns to be more than just an awards show, but an inspiration for future generations that will, in Bond’s own words, “ensure they know, unequivocally, that we ROCK!”
