San Diego based electronics company ecoATM just donated $10,000 to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park in honor of Black History Month.
ecoATM is a trailblazing electronics reCommerce company that allows users to sell their smart devices for recycling or reuse. The company boasts itself as a “financially and environmentally responsible option for trading in unused electronics.” ecoATM is focused on the environment and sustainability, emphasizing the importance of recycling and repurposing the mobile devices that we spend so much time on everyday.
Currently, the company has more than 4,000 kiosks across the country in various locations that make it easy for consumers to trade in their devices for cash. The Atlanta area is one of ecoATM’s largest markets and they wanted to give back to the community by donating to one of their most historical sites, the MLK Jr. National Historical Park.
Tony Rome, marketing strategist at ecoATM, spoke exclusively to Because Of Them We Can about why they felt it was important to give back in this way. “We believe as a company that it’s important to support the communities that we do business in, I think it’s just that simple. It’s core to how we do business and it’s the right thing to do. It allows us to say thank you and at the same time it allows us to celebrate Black History Month in a way that benefits the people in Atlanta,” Rome said.
Dave Maquera, CEO of ecoATM, issued a statement about the donation saying, “ecoATM is rooted in the Atlanta community. We have over 50 kiosks in Walmart and other locations throughout the metro Atlanta area, and we are excited to be giving back to our community.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park is a treasure that attracts visitors not only nationwide, but also internationally. Just as sustainability is core to ecoATM, our donation will be dedicated to preserving this national treasure for the citizens of Atlanta and people worldwide.”

Judy Forte, Superintendent of the MLK National Historical Park, spoke about the donation saying, “The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park is dedicated to ensuring Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy lives on and inspires both present and future generations. We thank ecoATM for their commitment and dedication to help Atlanta continue to preserve our beautiful park.”
The park is the site of many landmarks associated with the late civil rights leader including the home where he was born and the Ebenezer Baptist Church where King served as co-pastor. Funds from the donation will go to supporting daily operations of the landmark site, property maintenance and educational programming.
ecoATM plans to continue to identify ways to interact and give back where they do business. They are always looking for ways to give back to their community and have plans on hosting an upcoming pop up shop in New York City, in celebration of International Women’s Day, giving back to young girls who don’t have educational resources across the globe.
