Bowie State University announced that Wanda Durant, widely known as “Mama Durant” and the mother of NBA star Kevin Durant, will be the commencement speaker for the spring ceremony on May 24th.

Ms. Durant is a dedicated advocate for empowering young people, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. Through the Durant Family Charitable Foundation, she champions initiatives that provide educational, athletic, and social programs to equip youth with the tools they need to achieve their dreams.

A gifted speaker, Ms. Durant has inspired audiences across various platforms, including corporations, non-profits, colleges, and youth groups. Her messages consistently emphasize hope, resilience, and the transformative power of belief.

Her impressive record as a keynote speaker includes prestigious organizations like J.P. Morgan Chase, The Ford Foundation, Thomson Reuters, and Brown Brother Harriman. She has also garnered national and international media attention and serves on the Board of Tigress Financial Partners, promoting financial literacy initiatives for disadvantaged women across the country.

In a demonstration of her commitment to Bowie State, Ms. Durant’s foundation provided a significant investment in 2022. The $500,000 contribution funded the renovation of the basketball arena within the Leonidas S. James Physical Education complex, including a new court, expanded seating, and upgraded press box facilities.

We celebrate Mama Durant and BSU’s Class of 2024! Congratulations!
