The youth continue to lead the way. This time it’s 17-year-old Lindsey Smith who took it upon herself to raise money to send new shoes to those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.
Because of Them We Can spoke to Lindsey’s mother, Lynell Smith, about her daughter’s act of service.
“When kids travel, they learn to care about others and [they] become global citizens. After hearing about the Bahamas my daughter wanted to help. She learned there is a big need for shoes after a flood since most people store [their] shoes on the closet floor and they are ruined,” she said.
Lindsey’s service has been cultivated through her training as a Girl Scout. She’s in the process of earning her final Girl Scouts Award for International Service to others. To make it happen, Lindsey appealed to neighbors, family, church members and schoolmates to donate to the cause. She also received a $100 coupon from the retail store and pitched in her own money that she saved from her summer job. In the end her final total allowed her to purchase 130 pair of new shoes.
A resident of Prince George’s County Maryland, Lindsey plans to deliver the shoes through the Embassy of the Bahamas. She hopes her act will help others while also illustrating what’s at the core of the Girl Scouts — service to others.
