He wanted to help any way he could!
19-year-old Darnell Wells is a barber at “The Shop” in Memphis, Tennessee, WREG News reports. Already full with his share of regular clients, the teen decided this summer he would extend his services to those who couldn’t make it to his chair, bringing his clippers and chairs to unhoused people who were most in need.
“We were just trying to help as many people as we can. We didn’t know we were going to help that many people,” explained Wells.
Setting up shop in the community, Wells brought out a red lawn chair, offering free haircuts to the homeless and some quick eats. Putting out a message via social media asking “Who wants to help me feed the homeless,” fellow teen Zac Sherrod quickly answered the call, bringing along burgers and good vibes for the big give back.
“It was only two people when we got there. I ended up cutting nine heads and had five more waiting. We ended up giving out at least 30 burgers,” Wells said.
The two went viral for their good deeds, racking up tens of thousands likes and shares. Wells said initially, he wasn’t even going to post about it but thought that his good deeds could help inspire others.
“We weren’t going to post it and publicize it at all, but God put it on my heart to post it. I hope it inspires somebody to go out and help somebody else,” said Wells.
“God laid it on his heart to go help people, and we feel like that’s what we were called to do at that time,” added Sherrod.
Wells said he enjoyed spending time with the people, exchanging stories and learning valuable life lessons from them. He hopes to keep his charitable endeavors going, planning to set up something soon to help young people out. Despite him being a teen himself, Wells said it’s important to give back in any way possible, even if he can only give a little.
“Sometimes it isn’t about how much you have, but sometimes it’s about how much you can give. I’m trying to get to kids, so they know it’s people doing the right thing, and you can do something positive and help other people,” he explained.
Keep doing what you’re doing Darnell! It’s extremely inspiring!
