September is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month. It’s a time to increase awareness and celebrate the beauty and resilience of people living with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair-loss. Singer-songwriter Keya Trammell kicked off the celebration a little early when she shared a touching story about a little girl who was inspired to embrace her alopecia after seeing Trammell opt not to wear wigs this summer.

We suggest you grab a tissue (or two) before you read Trammell’s inspirational post below, because it’s bound to give you all the feels.

I met ZION this past weekend while at a performance in Kankakee,IL. In the country. lol When I first began to perform, I saw her with a hat on. As I performed, I watched her take her hat off. I’d taken mine off so she could see I was bald as well. This summer, I challenged myself to not wear wigs. (Been wearing them since 1st grade) because of having #alopeciaareata. I said that on the mic as well. When I met her, I was full of joy. (Hence, the tears.) Zion’s Mother thanked me for not wearing wigs this summer. We also hugged and cried. I was a role model for her baby girl and the way that felt.. Reaffirmed me of my destiny. Learning to listen when God speaks can take you out of your comfort zone to only put you in a comforting situation. This little chica blessed me. Thank you Zion. Happy almost #alopeciaawarenessmonth!
