Spelman College made history this year with a graduating class unlike any before it.

For the first time in the college’s history, seven students were named valedictorians, each finishing with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The group, now known as “The Spelman Seven,” includes Aiyana Ringo, Alyssa Richardson, Nia-Sarai Perry, Cori’Anna White, Sophia Davis, Mariama Diallo, and Alexis Sims. Spelman College reports that the seven earned the distinction as part of the Class of 2026.

The seven scholars represent a wide range of academic disciplines. Ringo studied sociology, Richardson majored in biochemistry, Perry studied philosophy, White majored in political science, Davis studied sociology and anthropology, Diallo double majored in documentary filmmaking and psychology, and Sims studied political science and philosophy.

Their paths to the top of the class looked different, but the group has spoken openly about the role sisterhood played in getting there.

UATL reports that the students viewed their shared achievement less as a competition and more as a reflection of the collaborative culture they found at Spelman. Richardson described the college as a place where Black women can grow into their excellence and leadership alongside one another.

Their accomplishments also extend well beyond their GPAs.

Spelman College reports that Aiyana Ringo, a sociology major from New Orleans, saw the historic group as a reflection of Black women’s brilliance and the power of making history together.

Alyssa Richardson, a biochemistry major, is continuing her education at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nia-Sarai Perry, a philosophy major, balanced her academic journey with caring for her mother during a battle with breast cancer.

Cori’Anna White, a political science major, also served as Student Government Association president while maintaining her 4.0 GPA.

Sophia Davis studied sociology and anthropology, bringing together her interests in culture, research, and community.

Mariama Diallo double majored in documentary filmmaking and psychology, combining storytelling with an interest in the Black experience.

And Alexis Sims, a double major in philosophy and political science, focused much of her work on social justice, public policy, civil rights, and advocacy. She also re-established Spelman’s Mock Trial Team in 2023 and plans to pursue graduate study in international affairs before continuing toward law and doctoral studies.

Together, the seven made history not only by earning perfect GPAs, but by showing just how many different paths Black women can take toward excellence.

One historic class. Seven valedictorians. And seven more Spelman women ready to take what they learned far beyond campus.
