John Adesoye is proof that it is never too late to follow a dream.
At 64 years old, the father of five recently graduated as a registered nurse after studying at the University of the West of England while working as a healthcare assistant at Southmead Hospital, UWE Bristol reports.
Originally from Nigeria, Adesoye began his career far from healthcare. He worked as an electronics technician in Greece before moving to the United Kingdom in 2013. A year later, he started working at Southmead Hospital as a healthcare assistant and eventually decided to pursue nursing.
That decision led him back to school.

According to UWE Bristol, Adesoye completed his BSc (Hons) Nurse Degree Apprenticeship and graduated at Bristol Beacon. While studying, he spent one day a week learning on campus and the rest of the week working at Southmead Hospital, gaining experience across areas including cardiology, renal, orthopaedics, emergency care, intensive care, and community nursing.
He was not the only one in school, either. People reports that Adesoye studied at UWE at the same time as his son, Daniel, who was pursuing a degree in creative music technology.
Now, Adesoye has secured a registered nursing role at Southmead Hospital, the same place where his healthcare journey began.
For him, the work is deeply personal. After years spent repairing electronic devices, he said helping patients recover now brings him even greater joy and fulfillment.
“If I can do it, others can too. People are more brilliant and stronger than they think,” Adesoye said.
