Her appointment has been years in the making!
This September, Joi Harris will make history as the first woman and African American to serve as president and CEO of DTE Energy. The Detroit native and two-time Wayne State University graduate will lead one of the Midwest’s largest energy companies, overseeing a billion-dollar infrastructure strategy and the future of how Southeast Michigan powers itself, the Michigan Chronicle reports.
“I am honored to take on this role at such a pivotal moment for our company and industry,” Harris shared. “We are in a time of transformation, and I’m committed to executing our strategy with urgency — modernizing infrastructure, delivering for our customers, and building the energy systems that will power future generations.”
Harris’ journey began over 30 years ago as a high school engineering co-op at DTE. She steadily rose through the ranks, managing everything from operations to customer service before becoming president and COO. Along the way, she led major projects like the $1 billion Blue Water Energy Center while championing equity, innovation, and community care in Detroit.
Outside of work, Harris gives back through programs like DAPCEP and the Skillman Foundation, creating opportunities for young people in STEM and advocating for Detroit’s future.
A well-earned milestone, her leadership marks a powerful chapter for the city and its communities.
