She’s bringing history to the forefront!
CNN anchor Abby Phillip is stepping into the literary world with her debut book, a biography of civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson. Titled A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power, the book will be published by Flatiron Books (a Macmillan imprint) and is set to hit shelves this October.
Known for her sharp political insight and coverage of multiple presidential campaigns, Phillip is using her platform to shine a light on Jackson’s pivotal role in shaping American politics. The book focuses on his 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns and how he built “an unlikely coalition that showed how Black political power could be consolidated,” PEOPLE reports.
But A Dream Deferred goes even deeper. It explores Rev. Jackson’s journey from marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to laying the groundwork for what would become the modern Democratic coalition, a coalition that helped elevate leaders like Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden.
“If you know me, you know how important I believe HISTORY and STORYTELLING are. And this is a story that deserves to be told,” Phillip shared on Instagram. “Jesse Jackson broke barriers in his two campaigns for president in 1984 and 1988, paving the way not only for the first Black president but also supercharging the political power of Black voters in the Democratic Party.”
With her voice and perspective, Phillip is helping preserve the legacy of one of our community’s most influential leaders. A Dream Deferred is now available for preorder wherever books are sold.
