She’s the first in 33 years!
Emilie Kouatchou just made history as the first Black woman to star in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, Broadway Buzz reports.
According to The Broadway League, The Phantom of the Opera first premiered on January 26, 1988. Not only is it the first Broadway production to ever run for two decades, but it is also the highest-grossing show in Broadway history, raking in more than $675 million.

Now, for the first time in the show’s 33 year history, a Black woman is playing its starring role. On October 27, Kouatchou made history as the first Black woman to star in the production. She shares the role with Meghan Picerno and takes the stage three times weekly at various performances.

Kouatchou received a standing ovation at her debut performance and performed alongside Ben Crawford, who plays “The Phantom” and John Riddle as “Raoul.”
