Pixar just released the trailer for “Soul,” its first Black lead animation, reports CNN.
Soul is a film that centers around the meaning of life and death, much like Pixar’s Coco. Soul tells the story of a middle school band teacher whose real passion is playing jazz. The band teacher, Joe Gardner, is played by Jamie Foxx. Gardner falls into a manhole and ends up in a magical place where he is just a soul.
The film follows Gardner, a “soul-in-training,” as he tries to get back to Earth while discovering what it really means to have a soul. The trailer opens with the big question, “What would you want to be known for on earth?” It implores us to use our “short time on this planet” becoming the person you really want to be.
With 21 movies under its belt and 33 years of animated films, Soul is Pixar’s first movie centered around a Black character. Also lending their voice to the cast alongside Foxx are Daveed Diggs (The Get Down), Phylicia Rashad (David Makes Man) and Questlove of the legendary Roots Crew, Deadline reports. The animated movie also features an original score with new jazz music from Jon Batiste.
Soul is expected to hit theaters June 19, 2020. Check out the trailer below.
