The Mississippi Mass Choir is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished voices.
Mosie “Mama” Burks, the beloved former lead soloist of the iconic choir, has passed away at the age of 92, WLBT reports. Known for her unmatched vocals, unwavering faith, and radiant spirit, Mama Mosie left an imprint on gospel music that will live on for generations.
“A true Gospel pioneer, Mama Mosie was the unmistakable voice behind some of our most cherished songs… Mama Mosie’s powerful voice, unshakable faith, and joyful spirit touched hearts around the world and helped define the sound and soul of the Mississippi Mass Choir,” the choir shared on Instagram.
Though she didn’t begin singing with the Mass Choir until 1996, Mama Mosie quickly became a beloved figure. She sang lead on “This Morning When I Rose” just weeks before a Malaco recording session and traveled with the group to at least eight countries, ministering through music and leaving a lasting impression everywhere she went.
Even after retiring in 2020 following the choir’s 50th anniversary, her presence remained strong.
Rest easy, Mama Mosie.
